If you’ve forgotten your KeePass password, you’re facing a pretty big problem. That’s because you can’t reset your KeePass password.
Forgotten your KeePass password: Here’s what you can do
If you have forgotten your KeePass password, you will no longer be able to access your data.
- KeePass does not offer a way to reset your password.
- One of the reasons for this is to maximize the security of stored information and data protection.
- Since KeePass uses strong encryption (SHA256 by default) and there are no known backdoors, recovery methods using brute force or special tools are not promising.
- For this reason, even professional data recovery services are usually unable to help you with your problem.
- Therefore, your only option is to try to remember your password and try out various possible passwords. Pay attention to upper and lower case letters.
- To help you, you can write down passwords you have already tried so that you don’t waste time and have an overview.
- If you cannot remember your password, you will no longer have access to your passwords. You will then have to start a new database.
KeePass: What to do if you lose your master password?
If all attempts to recover the password fail, you will need to create a new KeePass database. In future, please note the following points to avoid losing your password again.
- Store your password securely: Don’t just memorize your master password; write it down on a piece of paper or in a notebook and keep it safe from unauthorized access. Ideally, store it in a safe. If possible, store it in several locations.
- Use a memorable password: You should definitely use a secure password to protect your KeePass database. However, make sure that you can remember it easily, for example by using a mnemonic device.
- Back up your database: Although backing up your database won’t help you if you lose your password, your password won’t help you either if your database is damaged.
