How to turn off the iPhone flashlight

by Tobias

Turning the flashlight on and off on your iPhone is quick and easy. There are different methods for doing this depending on which device you have.

Turning the flashlight on and off on your iPhone

If you want to turn the flashlight on and off on your iPhone, you can use the Control Center to do so.

  1. Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner on newer iPhone models without a physical Home button. On other iPhones, open it by swiping up from the bottom.
  2. Here you can turn on the flashlight by tapping the corresponding icon.
  3. Starting with iOS 13, you can adjust the brightness of the flashlight. To do this, press and hold the flashlight icon in the Control Center.
  4. A menu will open offering different brightness levels. Select the desired level.
  5. Turning it off works the same way as turning it on: tap the flashlight icon.

Other ways to use the flashlight

In addition to the Control Center, there are other ways to turn the flashlight on and off.

  • You can control the flashlight using the Siri voice assistant. For example, say “Hey Siri, turn on the flashlight” or “Hey Siri, turn off the flashlight.”
  • You can also activate the flashlight from the lock screen. For iPhones with Face ID, tap and hold the flashlight icon at the bottom left of the lock screen. The flashlight will turn on immediately. If you have an iPhone with Touch ID, you can turn on the flashlight from the lock screen via the Control Center.
  • Starting with the iPhone 15, you can use the Action button to control the flashlight. You must first set this up in the settings. Tap on “Action button” and set the flashlight as the action.
  • The flashlight will then be activated when you press the action button. It can be deactivated again in the same way.

Flashlight not working: Here’s what you can do

Sometimes, the flashlight icon in the control center may be grayed out or the flashlight may not respond.

  • This is often because an app such as the camera is blocking the flashlight function. Close all apps that could be using the camera LED and try activating the flashlight again.
  • Activated energy-saving mode can also prevent the flashlight from working properly. You should therefore deactivate this mode before use.
  • If the flashlight still does not work, restarting your device may also solve the problem.

If you need light for a longer period of time, you should use a proper flashlight. This is because the flashlight function drains your cell phone battery particularly quickly.

  • However, if you need a particularly powerful flashlight, you should do your research before buying.
  • Our CHIP partner AllesBeste has thoroughly tested 14 flashlights. In the detailed test report, you can read which model performed best. You will also find lots of additional information about the test procedure and what you should look out for when buying.
