If you want your Senseo Switch coffee machine to last a long time, you should descale it regularly. We’ll show you how to do this with this practical tip.
Descaling your Senseo Switch coffee machine: What you need
To descale your Senseo Switch machine properly, you will first need a few tools. Here’s what you need for the process:
- Original Senseo descaler for your specific coffee machine or, alternatively, citric acid powder
- Tap water, a scale, a measuring cup, and a spoon
- Two Senseo coffee pads that you have used recently
- A heat-resistant bowl that can hold at least one liter and fits under your coffee machine

How to properly descale your Senseo Switch machine
If you have decided to use the original Senseo descaler, you should follow the instructions on the packaging. If you are using standard citric acid powder, proceed as follows:
- Take the measuring cup and fill it with one liter of tap water. Then pour the water into the bowl. Now weigh out 50 grams of citric acid powder and add it to the water. Stir the powder with a spoon until it has completely dissolved.
- Then remove the water tank from your Senseo Switch coffee machine and fill it with the water and citric acid powder until you reach the maximum mark. Then insert one of the used pads as a filter and turn on the machine.
- Place the heat-resistant bowl under your coffee machine, where you would normally place the cups, and start the cycle. Let the machine run until you have collected all the water and citric acid powder in the bowl.
- Then take the second, recently used pad and repeat step 3. Once everything has run through, remove the water tank and clean it thoroughly with tap water. Pour away the liquid collected in the bowl.
- Now refill the water tank with tap water until you reach the maximum mark. Put the water tank back into your Senseo Switch machine and place the bowl underneath the coffee machine again. Run the water through the second pad at least two or three more times and pour away the collected water again.
- Now remove the coffee pad and clean the pad holder under running tap water. Once you have cleaned everything, you can use your machine again as usual.
Important information about descaling your Senseo Switch machine
According to the manufacturer, you should descale your Senseo machine every three months if you use it regularly. However, make sure you do not descale the coffee machine more than six times a year.
- In addition, you should also refrain from using any descaling agents that are based on so-called mineral acids.
- These include sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulfamic acid, and, in particular, acetic acid. Therefore, never descale your machine with such products, as they could damage it.
