In addition to classic craft ideas such as chestnut figures, there are also unusual DIY projects for fall that you can try out with children.
Craft ideas with children for fall: Cute animal collages
Create animal collages using things that the forest has to offer in autumn. The basic idea: first draw the animal faces or parts of the body using colored pencils, felt-tip pens, or brushes and ink; then add leaves, acorns, and other items to complete the picture.
- Hedgehog: To make a hedgehog, draw the basic shape of the body on craft cardboard, paint the face, and then imitate the spiky fur using acorn caps, which you attach to the cardboard with craft glue or hot glue. Or you can paint the hedgehog sitting down and add a wreath of chestnut shells.
- Squirrel: You can also create a squirrel using this technique. Draw the outline and paint the head and body. For the tail, glue small larch cones onto the paper, whose scales look like the bushy fur of a squirrel’s tail.
- Lion: To make a lion’s head, you will need craft cardboard, craft glue, paints, and plenty of colorful autumn leaves—preferably pressed. Paint the lion’s face again with colors of your choice. Create the mane by arranging the leaves in a circle around the head and securing them with craft glue.
- Sheep: To make a sheep, first cut a circle out of craft cardboard and cover it completely with acorns or hazelnuts. Then cut four legs and a head out of the cardboard—glue the head onto the circle and the legs under the edge. Paint a face on the sheep, glue some moss on for the forehead, and your craft is complete.
Creative figures made from acorns, chestnuts, and more with children
Chestnut figures are among the classics of autumn crafts with children. Instead of simply sticking chestnuts together with toothpicks, get creative with your children.
- Deer: Use an acorn with its cap as the head, a chestnut or sweet chestnut with its shell as the body, and give the deer legs with four toothpicks.
- Owl: For an owl, you need one chestnut for the head and one for the body. Place two chestnut shells on either side of the body to form wings. Use two acorn caps to make the eyes and two maple “nose tweezers” to create the eyebrows.
- Hedgehog: To make a hedgehog, cover a chestnut with either its own shell or some moss. Use red berries or beads for the eyes and glue a narrow stick or acorn cap onto the body for the nose.
- Fantasy animals: Create magical fantasy animals together with your children. In addition to common materials such as chestnuts and acorns, feathers give the figures a special look. Use nose clips to create long ears or wings, and you can also paint faces or patterns on the figures with a white marker.
Making autumn crowns with children
Most autumn crafts are pretty to look at, but they just sit around. Make autumn crowns and wreaths with your children and turn autumn fruits and colorful leaves into accessories:
- First, cut a wide strip of thick craft cardboard that fits around your child’s head.
- Now glue all kinds of autumnal natural materials onto the cardboard strip—colorful leaves, pine cones, larch branches with cones, acorns, chestnuts, etc.
- When decorating, leave one to two centimeters free on one side of the strip so that you can stick the two ends together at the end to create an autumnal crown.
