Bruising after a blood test: What you need to know

Basically, blood sampling and puncturing the skin with a needle at the doctor’s office is quite safe. However, it often causes bruising, known as hematomas, which can be painful.

• Bruises can occur during blood sampling if the doctor’s assistant pricks next to the vein or injures it. However, the vein may also burst. In this case, blood will leak out. The result is a bruise.

• In very rare cases, phlebitis can occur. This can lead to the formation of local blood clots.
• Phlebitis occurs as a result of trauma to the vein and inflammation of the affected area. This causes a thrombus to form.
• However, inflammation can also occur if bacteria and pathogens enter the skin with the needle. Inflammation is usually accompanied by discomfort and fever. If you suspect you have phlebitis, consult a doctor immediately.
