What is Screen X? Meaning of cinema technology explained

by Corinna

The term Screen X is mostly familiar to cinema goers. Many may also have experienced this technology but did not know the name

Screen X: What’s behind it

Screen X is not just an ordinary cinema screen. This technology has three of them.

  • From traditional cinemas, you are used to looking at one screen. At Screen X, however, there is another screen to the right and left of each one.
  • This technique allows you to see things that would not be possible with a single screen. You look beyond the edge of the screen, so to speak. This technique is also called the 270-degree technique.
  • The screens are illuminated by several projectors, which is called multi-projection technology. Since not all film shoots take Screen X into account, the film has to be edited afterwards to make the experience possible.
  • Screen X was designed in South Korea and was presented for the first time in 2015. However, it only came to Germany a little later, in 2019. So far, you can visit such a cinema in Berlin and in Kassel (as of 2023).
  • If you want to use the UCI Luxe at Mercedes Platz in Berlin, you currently pay (as of 2023) 12.90 euros for the ticket and 3 euros extra for Screen X.
