If the trunk of your car won’t open, the fault could be mechanical or electronic. In this article, we’ll show you how to solve the problem.
Trunk won’t open: Check for faults
First, you should rule out a simple blockage. Try the following:
- Fold down the seats and open the tailgate from the inside.
- Most cars have an emergency release on the tailgate. This can usually be operated with a screwdriver.
- In some models, you can simply remove a small cover in the tailgate and release the cable by hand. You can find the exact procedure in your car’s manual.
Trunk won’t open: Remove the cover
If the car is no longer under warranty, you can attempt to repair it yourself:
- To do this, go to the trunk and unscrew the cover of the tailgate.
- Take a close look at the interior. Check the cable and try to open the door manually from the inside.
- If the problem is not mechanical, it may be electrical. In most cases, you can repair broken cables or replace them if necessary.
- However, the cables are often not located in the tailgate, but to the left or right of it in the bodywork.
- If you cannot solve the problem yourself, the only solution is to take the car to a repair shop.
