Trunk won’t open – what to do?

by Johannes

If the trunk of your car won’t open, the fault could be mechanical or electronic. In this article, we’ll show you how to solve the problem.

Trunk won’t open: Check for faults

First, you should rule out a simple blockage. Try the following:

  • Fold down the seats and open the tailgate from the inside.
  • Most cars have an emergency release on the tailgate. This can usually be operated with a screwdriver.
  • In some models, you can simply remove a small cover in the tailgate and release the cable by hand. You can find the exact procedure in your car’s manual.

If the car is no longer under warranty, you can attempt to repair it yourself:

    • To do this, go to the trunk and unscrew the cover of the tailgate.
    • Take a close look at the interior. Check the cable and try to open the door manually from the inside.
    • If the problem is not mechanical, it may be electrical. In most cases, you can repair broken cables or replace them if necessary.
    • However, the cables are often not located in the tailgate, but to the left or right of it in the bodywork.
    • If you cannot solve the problem yourself, the only solution is to take the car to a repair shop.
