MOBA: What it means

by Pramith

The meaning of MOBA is quite simple. The term crops up frequently in the online gaming community, but still confuses laypeople and newcomers. So read on to find out what this abbreviation stands for.

MOBA: What’s behind the abbreviation

The meaning of ‘MOBA’ becomes clear as soon as you spell out the abbreviation. MOBA stands for ‘Multiplayer Online Battle Arena’ and describes a sub-category of ‘real-time strategy’ games – that is, games played online in real time.

  • MOBA games are online games in which several players battle each other strategically. The playing field for these battles is an arena-style map. Two to four teams attempt to reach the opponent’s base and thus wipe out the enemy team.
  • Unlike classic ‘RTS’ – ‘real-time strategy’ – games, players in MOBA games do not build up resources. The army they play with can be described more as a kind of ‘hero unit’.
  • One of the first MOBA games was ‘Warcraft III’. One of the best-known MOBA games is ‘League of Legends’.
