How does an LED work? Explained simply

by Pramith

LED bulbs are now very widespread. In this practical tip, we’ll explain exactly how an LED works.

How does an LED work?

  • LED bulbs are regarded as the new standard technology when it comes to lighting.
  • This is because LED bulbs are more energy-efficient whilst still producing sufficient light.
  • Inside the LED is a crystal filled with positive and negative electrons.
  • When the power is switched on, the electrons fall into what is known as a transition layer and release their energy in the form of light.
  • The key difference compared to a standard incandescent bulb is therefore that LEDs do not generate light only when heated, but convert the electricity directly into light.
  • Another advantage over conventional incandescent bulbs is the very long lifespan of LEDs. They can last for up to 40,000 hours or more.
  • Of course, you can install LED bulbs in various colour combinations, entirely according to your taste.
  • You can do this, for example, using so-called light tubes. These LED tubes are extremely versatile.
