Calibrating a projector – here’s how

by Pramith

If you want your projector to display brightness, sharpness and other settings perfectly, you’ll need to recalibrate the device each time you move it to a new location. In this practical tip, we’ll show you how to do this.

Calibrating a projector using a test image – here’s how

To calibrate a projector, you’ll need a suitable test image. The appearance of the test image will show you which settings need to be optimised.

  • Open both test images on their respective pages and save them to your computer by right-clicking.
  • We recommend using both test images for the following instructions.

Instructions: Calibrating the projector yourself

Set the projector to display one of the test images and open the menu using the buttons on the projector. Go through the individual steps and optimise the relevant settings.

  1. Overscan: First, check whether the projector is displaying the image area correctly and in full. If you can see all the arrowheads at the edge of the test field, the image is correctly aligned.
  2. Brightness: You will see several shades of black on a graduated scale. You must be able to distinguish all the levels clearly from one another.
  3. Contrast: Do the same with the scale of slightly lighter grey tones. Here, too, you should be able to distinguish each individual level.
  4. Colour: Natural colours make a big difference. Use the women in the centre to check whether the colour settings are correct. The individual levels in the colour scales for red, green and blue must also be distinguishable.
  5. Sharpness: The crosshairs and the white areas within them must be displayed clearly and must not be blurred.
  6. Tip: Also pay attention to the lighting conditions in your room and keep checking with your own eyes to ensure the overall picture looks right.
