Water dripping under the car: what you need to know

by Flo

If water drips out from under the car and forms a puddle, this is usually completely normal. But there can also be (increasingly) serious reasons.

Water dripping under the car: this could be the cause

If you keep noticing a few drops of water, a small puddle or a stain under your car, there may be several reasons for this.

  • When temperatures rise in summer, the air conditioning in your car is also running at full speed. To prevent you from sweating in the car, the air conditioning system works up a sweat for you.
  • The dripping water under the car is condensation. The warm air condenses on the cold pipes. The higher the temperatures and the higher the humidity, the more water drips under the car after the journey.
  • You can recognize the water without a doubt because it is transparent and has no smell (after all, it’s just water).
  • At high outside temperatures, the puddle of condensation under the car usually evaporates again quickly.
  • Modern vehicles are often equipped with sensors that can detect fluid loss and display it in the on-board computer.
  • AdBlue in diesel vehicles and possible leaks of this fluid can also be a reason. AdBlue leaks can occur at various points in the system. These include a leaking AdBlue tank, defective or blocked injection nozzle, leaking lines or hoses or problems with the AdBlue pump.

If a liquid other than water is dripping from the car

However, other fluids can also leak and drip from the bottom of the car.
You should generally be more careful here.

  • If you see a blue, red or green color and can detect an odor, it may also be leaking coolant or windshield wiper fluid. Leaking windshield washer fluid often escapes through a cracked container or a hose that has slipped off. This is usually quickly apparent.
  • The leaking fluid can also be engine oil, gasoline or diesel fuel. Petrol can be easily recognized by its pungent smell and transparent appearance. Diesel also has a typical odor. You can also recognize fuel by its greasy consistency.
Leaking engine oil is greasy and does not smell as pungent as gasoline and diesel. Caution: If one of these liquids leaks, your vehicle must no longer be moved, as there is a risk of fire.

  • It is not always easy to analyze the leaking fluid Tip: Collect the leaking fluid with a container or cloth and show the sample to someone who is familiar with vehicles.
  • If in doubt, it never hurts to have a look under the hood (by a specialist). This will allow you to quickly locate any leaks in the engine compartment.

Possible reasons for electric vehicles and hybrid models

In electric vehicles and hybrid models, the following specific reasons may be responsible for water drops under the car:

    • As with conventional vehicles, the air conditioning system is also a common cause of water drips in electric and hybrid vehicles: condensation on the air conditioning components, especially on hot and humid days; blocked or defective air conditioning drain hose.
    • Electric and hybrid vehicles have special cooling systems for the battery: leaks in the battery cooling system can lead to liquid escaping. Damaged coolant lines or connections in the battery pack can also be a reason.
    • The battery housing itself can leak under certain circumstances: Inadequate seals or manufacturing defects can allow water to penetrate. Damage to the battery housing due to external influences.
    • Many electric vehicles use a heat pump for heating and cooling: leaks in the heat pump system can lead to water escaping.
