If your PS3 freezes whilst you’re playing, you can resolve the issue via the Recovery Menu. This is often caused by problems with the PlayStation’s file system. It may also be necessary to rebuild the database. Find out how to do this here.
1. PlayStation 3: Accessing the Recovery Menu after a crash
Use the following button combinations to enter the PS3’s Recovery Mode:
- If your PlayStation has frozen again, first put the console into standby mode.
- Now, whilst the console is in standby mode, press and hold the PS3’s power button for approx. 3–5 seconds. You will hear three beeps and the green LED will flash.
- Release the Power button and wait a moment until the console has switched off again. Now press and hold the Power button once more until the PlayStation 3 beeps.
- You will hear two more beeps – the console will then boot into the Recovery Menu.
2. Restore the PS3 file system and rebuild the database
There are six different sub-options in the Recovery Menu. To prevent the PlayStation from freezing, sub-options 3 and 4 are of particular interest. Please note: Make a backup of your save files and trophies before restoring the file system and database – messages and save files may be lost.
- First, select option [Dateisystem wiederherstellen]. The contents of the system disc will then be checked against the management section, and any errors will be corrected if necessary.
- Next, select the second menu option [Datenbank neu aufbauen]. The PlayStation 3’s database is responsible for ensuring correct access to the data.
- Now switch off the PlayStation. Provided there is no hardware fault, the PS3 should now run perfectly again without crashing.
