God of War Ragnarok: Defeat Thor – Tips and tricks.

by Pramith

You fight Thor twice in God of War Ragnarok. Each fight has 3 phases. Fight optimally in these phases and defeat the god of thunder.

First fight in God of War Ragnarok against Thor

The first battle against Thor takes place in the main mission Fimbulwinter Survival and has 3 stages.

  • In the first phase, the leviathan axe is not available to you. Therefore, play especially carefully and avoid attacks with a red circle. You cannot block these.
  • If an attack can be blocked, you will see a yellow circle. After a perfect block, you have a short moment to counterattack. Use melee attacks and activate Spartan Rage to damage Thor and heal up a bit if necessary.
  • When Thor has lost half his life, perform a Quick Time Event. This will give you the Leviathan Axe and allow you to use it.
  • In the second phase of the battle, Thor uses his hammer Mjölnir. To avoid taking damage from his hammer attacks, you must counter the attack. Also, avoid his lightning bolts.
  • If Thor is near you and has just attacked you, you can throw one of the stone pillars at him.
  • In a cutscene, Thor throws his hammer at Kratos, who catches it in response. You then see your hero die, and be brought back to life by Thor with the words “I’m not done with you yet.” So just wait for the sequence in a relaxed manner to continue fighting afterwards.
  • Thor has new attacks in the third phase of the fight. If it rains lightning, dodge these as you would red attacks. If Thor hits the hammer on the ground several times, red circles appear. Dodge these as well.
  • The tactics for the third phase are not too different from the previous ones: Counter after Thor’s attacks and use Spartan Rage as soon as the ability is available.
  • The axe throw is also useful at this stage. Use it when moving away from Thor.

The second boss fight against the Thunder God

In the second fight against Thor you finally defeat the god. The fight is in Asgard and again involves three phases.

  • Even in the first phase Thor uses Mjölnir and sometimes he tries to grab Kratos. You should avoid this attack if possible, otherwise he will grab them. If you miss the quick time event, he does considerable damage.
  • Block and counter as many attacks as possible to deal damage to Thor. Also use your rune attacks as well as unique attacks. Especially Spartan Rage can be helpful, as you can heal yourself a bit with your hits.
  • In the second phase of this fight, Thor is significantly stronger than in the first. If Thor is hovering above the ground and two blue circles appear, quickly use Shield Strike to avoid taking damage.
  • Use attacks with the axe. Continue to rely on the attacks from the first phase to damage Thor. You can increase the frost damage of your axe in “calm” moments when Thor is charging an attack, for example. To do this, hold down the [triangle] button on your controller. But really only do this when you have the time.
  • Once you have brought Thor to a third of his life, the next phase of the battle begins.
  • The last phase is characterised by permanent red circles on the ground. You have to avoid these.
  • In addition, Thor catapults himself into the air with the hammer. A red circle indicates where he lands. You should make sure not to stand there if possible and get to safety. After landing, you will then have some time to attack Thor.
  • Use the Draupnir Spear as well, as the Leviathan Axe is usually ineffective. After an explosion of the spearhead, Thor is immobilised. Then attack him.
