Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition – Is there crossplay between platforms?
Many fans are wondering whether crossplay – i.e. cross-platform gaming between different systems – is possible in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition. As of July 2025, the Definitive Edition of Stronghold Crusader has been released exclusively for PC via Steam. Crossplay is therefore not available. There have been no official announcements regarding versions for consoles, Mac, Linux, or mobile devices, nor is there any information about a cross-platform multiplayer feature.
- All published multiplayer features refer explicitly to gameplay within the PC version, for example via the Steam platform. This means that you can only play online with friends if they also use the Steam version on PC.
- Interaction between the PC and any console or mobile versions that may be released at a later date is not currently possible (as of July 2025) – cross-play is not mentioned in the official developer FAQ, press releases, or feature lists.
- Should future updates or implementations for other platforms be released, it remains to be seen whether cross-play options will be added.
- However, it will not be included in the Definitive Edition at launch. Anyone wishing to use the cooperative mode or other online features will therefore need the identical PC version on Steam.
Multiplayer features of the Definitive Edition at a glance
With the release of Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition in July 2025, Firefly Studios is not only giving the classic game fresh graphics and new content, but also expanded multiplayer options, albeit only within a single platform, as already mentioned.
- Players can look forward to a cooperative mode that allows them to defend or besiege legendary desert castles together with friends.
- Up to eight players can compete in online battles at the same time, supported by a variety of new maps, larger map sizes, and a massively increased maximum number of units.
- In addition to classic skirmish and campaign modes, the Definitive Edition includes a completely new co-op path. Community features such as Steam Workshop support, online leaderboards, and numerous quality improvements round out the experience.
