ChatGPT vs. Google Bard: Differences explained simply!

by Mike

ChatGPT vs. Google Bard – both are chatbots developed by different companies and their differences are not only in the name.

These are the differences of ChatGPT vs. Google Bard

Both ChatGPT and Google Bard are so-called AI chatbots that are able to process texts and imitate the behaviour of a human conversation partner thanks to machine learning. However, the two competing products also differ from each other.

  • The differences already start with the companies of the respective chatbots. ChatGPT is developed by OpenAI, a US-based research lab that also invented the GPT-3 language model underlying ChatGPT. While OpenAI was originally set up as a non-profit organisation, it has since formed a for-profit subsidiary and received investment from Microsoft.
  • Google Bard, as the name suggests, is being developed by Google or Alphabet and is Google’s answer to the progress and success of ChatGPT. Google uses its own language model for Bard, called LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).
  • Another difference lies in the availability of both chatbots. ChatGPT is available in both a free trial version and a paid pro version. Google Bard is currently only available for free, but only to a limited number of selected testers.
  • In contrast to Google, which is still keeping Bard under wraps, OpenAI has already made the ChatGPT API available to users, allowing them to use or integrate the chatbot for their own apps. One of Google’s goals with Bard AI is to integrate the chatbot into Google Search. However, Google also plans to make Bard available to a larger number of developers.
  • Both bots work on the same principle and can answer and respond to questions. In contrast to Bard AI, which as of March 2023 was introduced exclusively in connection with Google Search and accordingly primarily provides answers to search queries, ChatGPT can also generate its own detailed texts and content such as functional programming code.
