If you have received an email from Netflix, you should first make sure that it is not a phishing attempt. You don’t need any specialist knowledge to recognize a fraudulent email, just a moment of your time.
Email from Netflix: How to tell if it’s legit
Even if you receive an email with Netflix as the sender, you can’t be sure that it’s actually from the streaming provider. Unfortunately, phishing emails sent in the name of major streaming services such as Netflix are not uncommon. To avoid falling for scammers, you should always check whether the email is actually legitimate.
- Display the sender’s email address. With many scam emails, this is enough to recognize that the sender is not who they claim to be. Authentic Netflix messages are only sent from official domains, such as @netflix.com or @mailer.netflix.com. If a different domain appears or the sender’s address looks suspicious – for example, if it contains additional numbers, letters, or typos – you should not open the email or click on any links.
- However, there are also ways to fake the sender of an email. Fraudsters use this method for spoofing, for example. So even if the correct email address is displayed, this is not necessarily a reason to give the all-clear.
- Even if the email is written in a foreign language or contains spelling or grammatical errors, this is a warning sign. Netflix does not send emails in English or other foreign languages in Germany unless you selected a language other than German when you created your account. If you receive an email in a language you are not familiar with, caution is advised.
- Netflix always addresses you in official emails using the first and last name stored in your account. The streaming service does not use phrases such as “Dear customer,” “Dear user,” “Dear Customer,” or even “Hey there.” An impersonal greeting should make you suspicious.
- You should also always question whether the reason for contacting you given in the email makes sense. If you are unsure, contact support. However, do not use any phone numbers or links provided in the potential phishing email!
- You can reach Netflix customer service by calling 0800 000 9677 (9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.) or via Netflix Support Live Chat.
- As a general rule, you should never click on links in potential scam emails. Netflix will never ask you to disclose your credit card information, bank details, or password via email.
- You should also never disclose personal or login information. Login requests via embedded links are also unusual and risky. If action is required, Netflix will always ask you to log in directly via the official website or app.
- Threats such as irrevocable account deletion or similar and conspicuously short deadlines are often used by fraudsters to lure you into acting hastily. Don’t be intimidated and take the time to check everything critically.
- Not sure if an email is genuine? There’s a simple trick you can use: log in to your Netflix account and check the “Notifications” menu. All official messages are displayed there. If there is no message there, the email was most likely not from Netflix.
Received a phishing email: What you should do now
If you have identified a phishing email, you should delete it immediately. Netflix also provides useful information on what measures you can take to protect yourself before or after a phishing attempt in its FAQ.
- Netflix also asks users to forward fraudulent emails to [email protected] on its support website. You can also report suspicious text messages here.
- If you realize that it is a scam after clicking on one of the links, you should immediately change your password and contact Netflix via [email protected].
- If you use the same password on multiple sites, you should change it everywhere.
- If you have provided payment information, inform your bank immediately. This will allow them to check more quickly whether any payments have been made that you did not initiate.
