Opening hours on New Year’s Eve: What you need to know

by Mike

Spontaneous shopping on New Year’s Eve can be stressful. Especially if you don’t know the exact opening hours. Before you have to wander through the city on 31.12.2021 to buy last-minute champagne or party hats, here is an overview of the opening hours.

These opening hours apply on New Year’s Eve

Because New Year’s Eve is not a public holiday, shops do not have to stay closed. You can shop in most shops at least until noon.

  • Nevertheless, there are certain regulations. This is handled differently in the respective federal states.
In the federal states of Bremen, Hesse and Thuringia, for example, the law stipulates that shops must close at 2 pm. In most other federal states there are no restrictions.
  • Nevertheless, not all shops may take advantage of this time and may close as early as lunchtime.
  • So supermarkets tend to be open longer, while electronics shops like Media Markt or Saturn tend to close at 14:00.
  • But since it is up to the shop owners and operators how long they are open, look out for notices in shop windows, Alternatively, check on the internet or call the shop in advance to avoid being faced with closed doors

Legislation in the individual federal states

There are different rules for opening hours in the individual federal states:

  • In Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein shops are allowed to be open around the clock from 00:00 to 24:00.
  • In Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony, opening hours are from 06:00 to 22:00.
  • In Bremen, Hesse and Thuringia, shops close at 14:00.
  • Saarland and Bavaria allow sales from 06:00 to 20:00.
  • As mentioned above, these are only the legal requirements. How this is handled in detail differs from shopkeeper to shopkeeper
