Salt crystal lamp: The effect on health

by Michaela

Even though the effect of salt crystal lamps has not yet been scientifically proven, many people who use them report a positive influence on their well-being.

Salt crystal lamps have a positive effect

Around 250 million years ago, large quantities of salt and iron oxide were deposited on the sea floor. This is how the typical color of these unusual-looking lamps came about. Even today, these salt crystals, whose purity is unique, are still mined in the Himalayan region at a depth of about one thousand meters. Salt crystal lamps are traditionally associated with certain effects, such as improving indoor air quality and promoting general relaxation. But what is really behind this?

  • When salt crystals are heated, negative ions are released, which combine with the excess positive ions (caused by exhaust fumes or electrosmog) in the air and neutralize them.
  • The release of tiny micro-particles of salt into the air can have a beneficial effect on the indoor climate and thus on the respiratory tract. The hygroscopic properties of salt can absorb moisture to a small extent. However, significant air purification or measurable ionization by salt crystal lamps has not yet been scientifically confirmed.
  • The orange light of salt crystal lamps bathes the room in a pleasant atmosphere. It is said to have a mood-lifting effect.
  • In offices, for example, the use of a Himalayan salt lamp can have a positive effect on your creativity. Please note, however, that this has not been scientifically proven and is mostly based on subjective perception.
  • Migraine and headache sufferers often report feeling relaxed and thus experiencing relief from their pain.
  • The glow of the light has a calming and balancing effect on people who have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. The warm, reddish light has a relaxing effect and positively influences sleep quality, as it does not interfere with melatonin levels.

Salt crystal lamps in your living space: What you should know

Salt crystal lamps are primarily an aesthetic and atmospheric element that promotes relaxation and, as an indirect light source, is well suited for the evening hours. Proven health benefits are limited to the soothing effect of the light and a certain amount of moisture retention. Those who use them consciously and safely benefit above all from a pleasant room atmosphere and improved well-being. But where should the lamp be placed?

    • Dry rooms are best, as high humidity (e.g., in the bathroom) can lead to dissolution or corrosion.
    • Also, make sure to place the lamp on a stable surface. We also recommend using a base, e.g., made of wood or glass, to protect furniture from salt deposits.
    • In addition to the location, the lamp also requires a certain amount of care. You should wipe it regularly with a dry cloth and cover it or disconnect it from the power supply when not in use.
    • Depending on how often you use it, it may also be a good idea to replace the light bulb from time to time.
    • Important: Please note that pieces of salt may flake off from time to time. This not only poses a risk of breakage to the lamp itself, but also a certain risk of injury. Therefore, take special care with children. Moisture can also cause short circuits or corrosion of the socket.
    • If you only want to use the lamp to improve air quality, houseplants or a special humidifier are also suitable.
