WD My Cloud: Setting up and managing cloud access

by Pramith
Cloud access on your WD My Cloud allows you to view and download your files via the Internet. We’ll show you how to do this.

Setting up cloud access on WD My Cloud

Cloud access to a WD My Cloud can be set up in just a few steps, both for home access on the local network and for remote access via the Internet.

  1. Depending on your location, you will log in using different URLs: To log in from home, use the address https://www.mycloud.com/#/ , while to access your device when you are out and about, use http://files.mycloud.com/login.php .
  2. Once you have opened the relevant page, log in with your access data and select whether you want to edit your “My Cloud Home” or “My Cloud” environment.
  3. In the web interface, click on “Cloud Access” in the menu bar at the top to access the relevant settings. In the user list on the left, select the user for whom you want to activate cloud access.
  4. Click on “Register” next to “MyCloud.com account” and then enter a valid email address. Shortly thereafter, you will receive a confirmation email with an activation link that you must click to verify your new MyCloud.com account.
  5. Only then will the account be active and ready for cloud access. To adjust access in the future, log back into the WD My Cloud user interface, open the “Cloud Access” tab, select the relevant user, and click on the icons next to the entered email address.
  6. Here you can either change the stored email address or completely revoke remote access.

WD My Cloud: Managing Web Access

The changes must be saved in each case for them to take effect immediately. Please note that the available options depend on the model:

  • Some WD My Cloud models, such as My Cloud EX2 Ultra or My Cloud Mirror, offer advanced rights management and user roles, while older models such as My Cloud Gen 1 have limited remote sharing.
  • For convenient management and synchronization, we recommend the free WD My Cloud desktop app or the WD My Cloud mobile app, which is available for iOS and Android.
  • The app allows you to access, upload, and share files and set different user permissions without having to log in via your browser each time.
  • Tip: Only set up remote access for trusted users and assign secure passwords to prevent unauthorized access.

Typical sources of errors and how to avoid them

Many problems when setting up or using WD My Cloud cloud access are caused by technical details in the network or incomplete settings.

  • A major error is that remote access does not work because port forwarding has not been configured correctly in the router. In this case, you should ensure that UPnP is enabled in the router or that the required ports are manually enabled.
  • Another common cause of access failure is outdated firmware on the WD My Cloud—updating to the latest version can often solve this problem. Some users report that cloud access is blocked if their home Internet connection does not use a public IP address, as is the case with some mobile or cable providers with carrier NAT, for example.
  • In this case, it helps to request a public IPv4 from your provider. Problems can also occur if the email address stored in the user profile has not been confirmed or contains a typo – therefore, always check that the activation link from the invitation email has been used correctly. A lack of synchronization between the app and the web interface occurs when the user is not logged in with the correct MyCloud.com account.
  • In this case, log out and log back in with the correct credentials. If the connection is slow or unstable, this may be due to insufficient upload speed in your home network. In this case, reduce the number of simultaneous accesses or only use larger files in your home network.
  • For mobile access, it is advisable to install the WD My Cloud Mobile app on your smartphone and set up remote access there, as this often responds to changing network connections better than browser access alone.
