What a browser is can be explained quickly: it is a piece of software that makes surfing the Internet easier. We will introduce you to a few.
What is a browser?
Web browsers are your gateway to the World Wide Web. But how do they work?
- A browser is a program that displays websites on the Internet correctly.
- When you visit a website, you don’t just open the finished product. Instead, your browser receives instructions, which it then assembles into the website.
- Since not all browsers speak all languages and dialects, i.e., understand the different HTML versions, it can happen that, for example, Firefox displays a website slightly differently than Google Chrome.
- Similarly, an old version may not understand as many languages as a new one. That’s why it’s important to keep your browser of choice up to date.
- However, basic functions are the same everywhere, so most websites should work the same in all browsers. In any case, you will always see text, images, and links as intended.
- On smartphones, browsers look slightly different and more compact, but they work the same as on your computer.
- Most browsers have additional functions. For example, there are Firefox variations that have built-in social media or anonymization functions to meet your personal needs.
Popular browsers at a glance
Over the years, several browsers have established themselves as particularly popular. Each of them has its own strengths and focus areas:

- Apple Safari: Particularly popular on Apple devices such as the iPhone or Mac. Safari is energy efficient, secure, and perfectly tailored to the Apple ecosystem.
- Microsoft Edge: The successor to Internet Explorer is now based on the Chromium engine and impresses with its high speed and integration with Windows features such as Microsoft 365.
