iPhone 14 (Pro) or iPhone 15 (Pro): Is it worth switching?

by Michaela

Are you wondering whether the iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 is better? Whether switching is worth it for you depends on your requirements and which model you currently own.

iPhone 14 or iPhone 15: Who should upgrade?

On September 12, 2023, Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 series. As with the previous generation, there are four models.

  • Switching from the iPhone 14 to the iPhone 15 could be particularly worthwhile if you are interested in a better camera, USB-C, and Dynamic Island.

  • Switching from the Pro models of the iPhone 14 to those of the iPhone 15 is less advisable. Compared to its predecessor, it features a redesigned titanium case, USB-C, and the Action button. However, there are no other significant improvements. If you want to test these features, the upgrade may be worthwhile.

  • If you are using older iPhone models, switching to the iPhone 15 (Pro) makes much more sense. The upgrade offers significant improvements in almost all areas.

  • Ultimately, the decision depends on individual usage patterns and personal priorities. Those who always want to use the latest technology will be satisfied with the iPhone 15 Pro. For others, it might make sense to wait for the next model or stick with their current device.

iPhone 15 (Pro): New features compared to its predecessor

The iPhone 15 models come with a number of new features:

  • Larger display with Dynamic Island: The standard model of the iPhone 15 shows a minimal difference in display size, changing from 15.4 cm to 15.5 cm with Dynamic Island. The notch that was previously built into the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus has been removed in the new generation. The refresh rate of 60 Hz remains unchanged in the base models.

  • Better camera: The main camera of the iPhone 14 and Plus models is getting an upgrade. The resolution of the main camera will increase to 48 megapixels, use pixel binning for better low-light photos, and be as good as the iPhone 14 Pro. The ultra-wide-angle camera will remain at 12 megapixels as before. Not much will change in terms of the camera on the Pro models. However, the Fusion sensor should enable more flexible zooming.

  • New chip: The iPhone 15 is getting an upgrade from the A15 to the A16 Bionic chip. This is currently only available in the iPhone 14 Pro models. The Pro models will get the new A17 Plus.

  • Connection: Due to an EU directive, Apple is switching from Lightning to USB-C on all iPhone 15 models. The new USB-C port also supports USB 3.0. This allows you to connect external SSDs directly, e.g. to record ProRes videos externally without using internal storage space.

  • UWB 2 chip: The UWB 2 chip (ultra-wideband, second generation) in the iPhone 15 (Pro) is another exciting upgrade. It enables features such as Precision Finding, which allows you to locate other devices in your vicinity with centimeter accuracy.

  • Battery: According to the manufacturer, there are no significant improvements to the battery, but in tests, the iPhone 14 still has a longer battery life (8:34 vs. 7:40 hours). There is no noticeable difference in charging speed.

  • New design: The iPhone 15 models are slightly more rounded than their predecessors. Another new feature is that the frame of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is made of titanium. This makes the frame less prone to fingerprints and gives the smartphone a more premium look. The solid-colored glass back is also visually striking.

  • Controls: The Pro models no longer have a mute switch. Instead, there is an action button. You can customize which action the button performs. The basic iPhone 15 models still have the classic mute switch.

  • Price: Apple is lowering the prices of the iPhone 15 series slightly for the first time. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus cost €849 and €949 respectively, making them cheaper than their predecessors. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max cost approximately €954 and €1349 respectively.

  • Updates: New iPhones will always receive the latest iOS operating system for the next five to six years and critical security updates for even longer. So anyone who buys an iPhone 15 can look forward to support until 2028/2029.
