Mad Max: Overview of the order of the films, including Furiosa

by Corinna

The order of the Mad Max films can be a little confusing. However, the entire series is primarily divided into only two parts.

Mad Max: Order of the Classics

The Mad Max series was created by Australian director George Miller. It tells the story of former police officer Max Rockatansky, who must survive in a dystopian version of Australia.

  • The action-packed film series began in 1984 or 1985 with the first Mad Max (1979). The eponymous protagonist, played by Mel Gibson, wants revenge on a dangerous biker gang that killed his son.
  • To do so, he pursues the hellriders across Australia in his modified Ford Falcon XB. He does not shy away from violence.
  • Mad Max II: The Road Warrior (1981) continued the story of Max, this time in the late 1980s. In this film, Max is searching for fuel, the most important resource in post-apocalyptic Australia.
  • He comes across a refinery that is under siege by marauders. He helps the residents fight off the gangs, but is left alone in the end. This film clearly shows the collapse of society and the scarcity of resources, as evidenced by the ever-present desert.
  • Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) takes a bigger leap forward in time, transporting Max to the beginning of the 21st century. This installment takes place about 15 years later and shows new orders and power structures that are essential to the later trilogy.
  • In this film, Max takes on Aunty Entity and her gang together with a band of children. This earns Max legendary status.

Chronological order of the new films

In 2015, the Mad Max saga continued with Tom Hardy in the title role. This installment of the film series takes place several decades after the original trilogy, with a significantly older Max.

  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) shows the beginnings of Empress Furiosa Jabassa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and takes place 20 years before Fury Road, probably around the year 2030. Furiosa is kidnapped as a child from the Green Lands by the gang of biker Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
  • She grows up over the course of the film and escapes from Dementus’ clutches. To do so, she joins forces with Immortan Joe, the antagonist from Fury Road. At the end, the film picks up directly where Fury Road left off.
  • The film Mad Max: The Wasteland, which has only been mentioned by George Miller so far, will be another prequel to Fury Road. It is set to take place about a year earlier and show Max’s journey until his capture by Immortan Joe’s minions.
  • There is currently no announcement about the film (as of October 2025). In an interview with Josh Horowitz, he said he was “waiting to see how Furiosa is received” before planning The Wasteland further.
  • Since Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga did not achieve the expected success at the box office, the title may be in jeopardy. We will keep you informed.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) is set in approximately 2050 and shows Max as an involuntary blood donor after his capture by Immortan Joe and his Warboys. He manages to join Furiosa during her escape attempt.
