When choosing the right projector, it is crucial to consider both the image size and the ambient brightness.
- Very low-light projectors with less than 100 lumens per square meter of image area are not suitable for home cinema – the image remains too low in contrast even in dark environments. Such devices are only suitable for simple text presentations in low ambient light.
- If you can completely darken the room, around 150 to 250 lumens per square meter of screen area is sufficient. For partial darkening or daylight, you should allow for 300 to 500 lumens per square meter.
- For particularly bright rooms, windows without blackout blinds or outdoor use in the open air, projectors with over 500 lumens per square meter are recommended. This is the only way to ensure that the image remains clearly visible even in daylight or sunlight.
How to always create the perfect image for your home cinema evening
Use this simple formula: Multiply the desired image area in square meters by the required number of lumens per square meter.
- An example: For a projected image with an area of 6 square meters, you need at least 600 lumens in complete darkness, but significantly more in normal daylight—around 2000 to 3000 lumens, depending on the desired contrast and sharpness.
- It is important to consider the lumen rating of the projector in relation to the projection size. A bright projector will still produce a poor image if the lumen output is insufficient for the size of the projection surface.
