Instagram: Blocking other users – here’s how

On Instagram, you can block other users if, for example, you no longer want to receive pictures or direct messages from their profile. There are two ways to do this.

Not every interaction on Instagram is welcome. If you want to block a specific person, you can do so directly via their profile.

• Open the Instagram app on your smartphone or tablet and select the user profile you want to block.

• Then tap the icon with the three dots in the top right corner.

• Go to the “Block” option. Instagram will automatically block all existing and future accounts belonging to the same person.

• If you want to unblock someone, tap the icon again and select “Unblock this person.”

How to block someone in Instagram chat

There are many ways to Rome – or in this case, to block someone. That’s why you can also block someone using the messaging feature.

• Open the chat with the person in question.

• Tap the user’s name at the top of the chat and then tap the three-dot menu.

• Select “Block.” Here, you can also decide whether you want to block only one account or all accounts associated with that person.

• After you confirm your selection, the contact will be blocked.

What happens when you block someone?

Once you block someone, it has a wide-ranging impact on your interactions with them:

• Your profile will be invisible to this person. They will not be able to find your content or account through search or shared posts.

• Existing likes and comments from the blocked person will be removed. These will disappear permanently, even if you unblock them later.

• Direct messages are no longer possible. Existing chats will remain visible, but new messages can no longer be sent or received.

• Group chats will remain. You will remain visible in shared group chats, but blocked people will not be able to create new groups with you or message you directly.

• Instagram will not notify the blocked person about the action – they may only notice that your profile or previous content is no longer visible.
