Cleaning Jewelry with Ultrasound: 6 Tips and Guidelines

by Flo

You can usually clean jewelry with ultrasound without any problems. However, depending on the type of jewelry, material, and other factors, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Cleaning Jewelry with Ultrasound: 6 Important Tips

  1. Material: You can usually place silver, gold, and stainless steel jewelry in the ultrasonic bath without any problems—provided the pieces are made of pure precious metals.
  2. Cleaning Solution: Fill the device with water up to the appropriate mark. If the jewelry is very dirty, you can also add a small splash of dish soap, but try cleaning it without it first. High-quality jewelry, as well as stainless steel, should generally be cleaned without any additives.
  3. Placement: Place the jewelry in the ultrasonic cleaner so that the individual pieces do not touch each other and could scratch one another.
  4. Turn on: Start the machine and let it run for about three to five minutes. If the jewelry is very dirty, repeat the cleaning process.
  5. Dry: Finally, dry the jewelry with a soft, lint-free cloth. This will prevent water spots.
  6. Polishing: If necessary, you can gently polish jewelry made of precious metals after the treatment. Use a jewelry polishing cloth for this.

When You Should Not Use an Ultrasonic Cleaner

Ultrasonic cleaners generate tiny air bubbles and vibrations that penetrate even the smallest crevices and effectively loosen dirt. While this method is effective, not all materials can withstand this treatment.

    • Pearls and pearl necklaces should not be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner, as the ultrasonic waves can damage the outer protective layer. Soft pearls, in particular, are very susceptible to this.
    • If something is glued to or on your piece of jewelry, you should also refrain from placing it in the ultrasonic bath, as the treatment can dissolve the adhesive.
    • You should also clean soft gemstones, oiled stones, or lacquered jewelry with a soft cloth or have them professionally cleaned.
