When you’ve had enough gaming, you’ll want to turn off your PS5. You can do this directly on the console, conveniently via the controller, or via your TV.
How to turn off your PS5
If you want to turn off your Sony PlayStation 5, there are several ways to do so. The easiest way is via the console itself:
- To do this, locate the power button. This is always located at the thinnest point on the front of the PlayStation 5, regardless of which version you have, including PS5 Digital, Slim, and Pro.
- This is the button located directly above the base when the console is in a vertical position and on the right-hand side when in a horizontal position.
- Press the power button for one to two seconds. You will hear a beep. You can then release the button and the console will switch itself off.
- This variant is the PlayStation 5 sleep mode, recognizable by the orange indicator light. This is useful if you want to turn off the console but also want to update it or download a game.
- To turn off the console completely, press and hold the power button for at least three seconds. It will beep twice and then turn off completely.
- Note: Never turn off the PS5 completely while saving or installing a game. This may result in data loss and software problems.
Turning off the PS5 using the controller: Instructions
You can also turn off your PlayStation 5 using the DualSense controller.
- Press the PlayStation button on the controller to open the Control Center. Select the power icon located on the far right.
- Confirm your selection with the [X] button on your PlayStation 5 controller. You will then have two options for turning off the console.
- You can turn off the PS5 completely, put it into rest mode, or restart it. Restarting is useful if a game is frozen and cannot be closed.
Turning off the PS5 via the TV
You can also turn your PlayStation 5 on and off via your TV. Please note that the console is not completely turned off, but rather put into rest mode.
- Connect the PlayStation 5 to your TV with an HDMI cable and select the appropriate HDMI channel. Then go to the console settings.
- Click on System and then on HDMI. In this menu, activate the HDMI device connection. As soon as you turn on your TV, your console will also turn on.
- You can turn off your PlayStation 5 via the TV in the same way. To do this, simply turn off your TV. The console will then automatically switch to sleep mode and will be ready for use again quickly when you turn it on.
- If this does not work, check whether there is a firmware update for your PS5 or TV.
- Tip: Sleep mode can be very useful. Navigate to Settings ☻ System ☻ Power Save and check the Options Available in Sleep Mode option. There you can set the PS5 to complete downloads in sleep mode, for example.
