It is essential to watch the Resident Evil movies in the correct order. This is because some of the storylines build on each other.
Resident Evil films: An overview of the main series in order
Between 2002 and 2017, Sony released the “Resident Evil” series, which comprises six films starring Milla Jovovich. Written and directed by British screenwriter and director Paul W. S. Anderson, the series builds on each other.
- The first film in the series, Resident Evil, was released in 2002. After an incident at the Umbrella Corporation’s secret underground research laboratory, a deadly virus escapes. As if this T-virus weren’t enough, all employees are automatically killed by gas through artificial intelligence.
- However, they are far from resting in peace, instead awakening as vicious zombies. A special task force from the corporation attempts to both stop the virus and escape the zombies. Among them is Alice (Milla Jovovich), a woman with amnesia.
- The sequel, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, was released in theaters in 2004 and focuses primarily on Alice. She is a woman who was abused by the Umbrella Corporation for genetic manipulation.
- The experiments sharpened her senses and Alice also became significantly more physically powerful. She manages to escape and meets police officer Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), with whom she attempts to flee the city. However, this is no easy task, as the city is still swarming with zombies.
- In 2007, Resident Evil: Extinction was released. In the third part of the film series, the fictional city of Raccoon City, where the secret research laboratory was located, is completely destroyed. The last survivors, including Alice, set out across the Mojave Desert to reach Alaska.
- Alice now also has telekinetic abilities, but she has no real control over them. Since the scientists see Alice’s genetic structure as a weapon against the T-virus, they try to capture their former test subject. But she manages to escape.
- Resident Evil: Afterlife followed in 2010 and introduces clones of Alice created through experiments by the Umbrella Corporation. These clones destroy the Umbrella Corporation’s headquarters in Tokyo. Alice, who has since lost her supernatural powers, sets off for Arcadia, supposedly the only place that is still safe.
- But when she arrives, Alice finds only Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), who is suffering from memory loss. Together, the two women travel to Los Angeles, where they learn that Arcadia was not the name of a city, but a ship. Ultimately, they manage to get on the ship.
- Resident Evil: Retribution was released in 2012 as the fifth installment in the series. The Arcadia is attacked by the Umbrella Corporation and suffers massive damage. During the battle, a violent explosion occurs, causing Alice to fall into a coma.
- When she awakens, she finds herself in an illusory world in which the corporation’s researchers have recreated various scenarios. Alice supposedly fights her way through Tokyo and Moscow. This staging is intended to make the T-virus appealing to potential buyers. However, a rescue team manages to free Alice from the clutches of the corporation.
- The conclusion of the original “Resident Evil” series is Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. While attempting to find an antidote to the T-virus, Alice is captured. But she manages to escape. Together with other survivors, she fights the numerous zombies in Raccoon City to find a cure. Alice finally manages to break into the underground research laboratory.
- When one of the scientists tries to escape with the cure, he is seriously injured and Alice manages to bring the antidote to the surface to release it there. This kills all the zombies. Although Alice herself was also infected with the virus, she survives the process.
