TTSFree: How the text-to-speech converter works

by Pramith

TTSFree is a tool that lets you dub text with artificially generated speech. Afterwards you can download the whole thing as an audio file

TTSFree – how to use the converter

How to use TTSFree to convert text to speech:

  • Write or copy the text to be dubbed into the text box on the provider’s website.
  • Under the text box, there are several setting options that you can use to customize the voices. TTSFree uses voice AIs from Google and Microsoft. Under the tab “TTS Server 1” you will find the voice AIs from Google and under “TTS Server 2” the AIs from Microsoft. Use the drop-down menus to select a language and/or a dialect.
  • After that you will be presented with different voices. With the green play button next to each voice, there is an audio sample. Below the voice selection are the two sliders “Voice Pitch” and “Adjust Voice Speed”. With “Voice Pitch” you change the pitch and with “Adjust Voice Speed” the speed with which the AI reads out the text.
  • After you have made the desired settings, click on the “Convert Now” button, which will set the text to music and play it directly after the conversion process.
  • Followed by the “Convert Now” button you will find the “Download Mp3” button, which will let you download the audio file.
  • Without a paid subscription you can convert a maximum of 500 characters per pass to spoken. However, the scope can be extended if you create a free account on the website. This way you can dub up to 2000 characters at once, have access to over 100 voices instead of 50, and over 30 languages instead of 20.

TTSFree – this is what the paid version can do

If you want to get the most out of TTSFree, you can switch to the paid version.

  • TTSFree comes in two subscription levels. You choose to pay either monthly or annually. If you pay annually, you save $10 on the Basic subscription and $40 on the Premium subscription.
  • With the paid version of the converter you unlock additional features and remove certain restrictions, but you can’t dub text unlimitedly.
  • For 5 USD per month or 50 USD per year, the Basic model lets you dub up to 10,000 characters at once. While TTSFree advertises that you can convert text to audio an infinite number of times with the 5 USD subscription, you are allowed a maximum of 2 million characters per month.
  • In the Basic subscription you have access to over 200 voices, over 50 languages, and unlock the ability to add background music to your dubbed text. You can either do this using the library of royalty-free music embedded on the page, or use YouTube and Soundcloud links.
  • You also unlock SSML recognition for the text editor with the paid subscriptions. SSML stands for “Speech Synthesis Markup Language” and is there to give the AI more precise instructions for dubbing the text. For example, pauses can be specified at certain points or numbers can be rendered differently.
  • With the premium subscription, 40,000 characters per dubbing and a maximum of 10 million characters per month may be used. So-called premium voices are added to the 200+ voices and the “News”, “Neural2” and “Wavenet” voices are unlocked. For Premium users, the 50+ votes from the Basic tier will be increased to 60+.
  • In addition to the other features from the Basic subscription, ads will be hidden on the page
  • You get access to the API of TTSFree and can therefore integrate it into your own applications.
