by Pramith

If you want to listen to Spotify via your Apple Watch, it’s easy. Depending on which version of the smartwatch you have, you now don’t even need to have your iPhone with you if you want to listen to music or podcasts on the go.

Listen to Spotify on the Apple Watch

If you want to use Spotify with your Apple Watch, both your smartwatch and your iPhone must meet certain system requirements. Then you can also listen to music or audio books using your smartwatch:

  • On your Apple Watch, you need watchOS 6.0 or higher.
  • Your iPhone must have at least iOS 12 (or higher).
  • If your Apple Watch and iPhone meet the system requirements, you must first install Spotify on your smartphone.
  • Then pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone via Bluetooth. Now you should be able to open and use Spotify on your smartwatch.
  • If Spotify does not appear on your Apple Watch, you will need to install the app on your smartwatch via the App Store.

Listen to Spotify without an iPhone directly via the Apple Watch

You can also use Spotify via the Apple Watch if you don’t have an iPhone nearby at the moment. This way you can stream music and audio books directly via the smartwatch and listen to them with Bluetooth headphones. But beware: To use this function, you need a Spotify Premium account. Furthermore, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Your Apple Watch must be at least from Series 3 and have watchOS 6.0 or higher if you want to use Spotify without an iPhone. However, Spotify recommends at least watchOS 7.1 to guarantee a smooth music experience.
  • If you have the standard version of the Apple Watch, however, you can only stream music over Wi-Fi. If you want to listen to your favourite tracks offline while jogging, you have to download them beforehand by tapping on the three horizontal dots in the Spotify app and selecting “Download to Apple Watch”.
  • If you have the Cellular version of the Apple Watch, you can also use Spotify while jogging or doing other activities without Wi-Fi. So you can leave your iPhone at home.
