Eye squeaks: this could be the problem

by Corinna

Many people have experienced this phenomenon – you rub your eye and it squeaks. In this article, we explain where this strange noise comes from and what exactly happens in the eye.

Eye squeaking – what happens in the eye

If you tried to make farting noises with your hands or armpits as a child, you will have experienced the same principle. As the air rubs against the skin when it is trapped in the armpit, for example, a noise is produced.

The same phenomenon occurs in the eye.

  • Air gets past the eye into the conjunctival fold or into a cavity between the conjunctiva and eyelid and is trapped there. If you rub your eye, the trapped air is pushed out again.
  • This is an indication of a dry eye. It only squeaks when the skin is dry. If it is wet, it will not squeak. This applies to the eye as well as to the hands and armpit.
  • This is therefore a normal process in the eye. However, if it occurs very frequently, your eye may be too dry. In this case, it is advisable to have your eye examined by a doctor, as dryness is bad for the eye in the long term.
