Christmas alone: tips against the holiday blues

by Michaela

Celebrating Christmas alone doesn’t sound particularly tempting at first. After all, it’s typical to spend the holidays with relatives and sit together over good food. However, Christmas alone can have some advantages.

This is how Christmas alone is fun

If you’re spending Christmas without the family, it’s the ideal time to finally put long-held plans into action. You finally have time for all the things that otherwise fall by the wayside in everyday life. This can look like this, for example:

  • Use the time to gather new strength. Read books, relax in front of the TV with a warm cup of mulled gin, go for long walks – all without stress. The holidays are the perfect time for this!
  • Be energetic! Often there is far too little time for sport in everyday life, for example. Maybe you’ll even discover a new sport for yourself.
  • In addition, you can get active in cleaning out your home. Cellars, floors, wardrobes and bookshelves – all these places quickly accumulate things that you don’t really need any more.

If you don’t want to celebrate Christmas alone

If you can’t celebrate with your family but still don’t want to be alone for the festival of love, you can turn to these tips:

  • The world doesn’t stand still at Christmas, there are various events on offer. Check with the nearby church community, for example.
  • Join like-minded people. Other people don’t want to be alone at Christmas either and are looking for company. Ask around in your club or circle of friends. You can also use the internet to connect with people.
You can also use this time to help others. For example, ask at the homeless charity, food bank or nursing home if they need help at Christmas. That way you are not alone and can do something good at the same time.
