Gum restoration – why it is important
When gums recede, dentists refer to this as gum recession.
- There are many reasons why gums recede. Gum inflammation, for example, can be responsible for this.
- Periodontitis also leads to gum recession. In this case, not only the gums but the entire periodontium is inflamed.
- Periodontitis refers to the degenerative change of the periodontium without inflammation. Here, too, the gums recede.
- The bad news: lost gums do not grow back. But here’s the good news: your dentist has various options for rebuilding your gums.

Gum restoration for better dental health through minor surgery
As already mentioned, gum tissue unfortunately does not grow back. However, there are ways to restore gum tissue.
- Professional teeth cleaning: This involves removing tartar and thoroughly cleaning and polishing each tooth individually. This measure is usually sufficient for early-stage and mild gingivitis, as the gums have not yet receded – one more reason to visit the dentist regularly.
- Flap surgery: In cases of gum recession, the dentist can rebuild the gums using a sliding flap technique. The dentist “slides” healthy gum tissue into the area where gum tissue is missing. This is then fixed in place with a small suture so that it can grow. If there is not enough healthy gum tissue available, a connective tissue graft is used.
- Tunnel technique: In this method, the gums are detached from the bone using special instruments. A split flap is then created in the tissue to form a tunnel. At the same time, some connective tissue is removed from the palate. This graft is then inserted into the tunnel and sutured in place.
- These microsurgical procedures should only be performed by specialists, i.e., certified periodontists. These dentists specialize in the treatment of gum problems and problems with the periodontium and are proficient in the various techniques.
