by Flo

If you want to overwinter citrus plants, the most important thing is the right ambient temperature and the light conditions of the location. With our tips, you can get your plants through the cold season in good condition.

Wintering citrus plants in the right location

Citrus plants, such as lemon trees, are sensitive and have some requirements for their overwintering location.

  • As soon as the outside temperatures approach zero, it’s time to move your citrus plants indoors.
  • For location, the darker the colder and the brighter the warmer.
  • If you have a conservatory, keep the temperature there between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius.
    • If you have a garage, garden shed or cellar, citrus plants can also be overwintered there.
      • It is important that there is a window so that some light comes in. The ambient temperature should be between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.
      • However, the roots must not get too cold. Therefore, place the plants on an insulating base, such as polystyrene sheets.

Care of citrus plants during the winter season

Not much care is needed during the wintering of citrus plants.

        • Test every fortnight to see if the top third of the soil has dried out. Then water moderately with lukewarm water.
        • Air the premises regularly to prevent mould from forming on the plants.
        • In addition, check the citrus plants regularly for scale infestation. This can occur especially in warmer locations with dry heating air.
