Windows 10: Creating a backup – the right way to do it

by Mike

With Windows 10, you should also regularly create a backup to protect your data. The safest way to do this is to store your data on an external hard disk

Instruction: Create a backup under Windows 10

Windows 10 can create a backup of your entire system. All settings and files are backed up. If your system or the entire computer is ever damaged, you can use the backup to restore everything to its original state.

  • Under the category “System and Security” you will find the item “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)”.
  • Select the option “Create system image” on the left and wait a moment.
  • Now decide where you want to save the backup. For this, you will need either an external hard drive or a second internal hard drive that does not have Windows installed.
  • In the next step, you can exclude individual parts of the system from the backup and get an overview of how much storage space the backup requires.
  • Finally, click on the “Start backup” button to create the backup.
  • Depending on the amount of data to be saved, the backup can take several minutes to hours.

Windows 10: Create a backup with external software

The storage space for backups is limited under Windows 10. Somewhat older backups will therefore be deleted after some time unless they are on an external hard drive.

  • If you want to keep your backups for a longer period of time, free programmes such as Easeus Todo Backup or Paragon Backup & Recovery will help you.
  • With SugarSync you can create a backup in the cloud. However, the backup is only free of charge within the first 30 days.
