How many watts should a hoover have? This is the power you need

When buying a new hoover, the question of how many watts it should have quickly comes up. However, the number of watts is not indicative of the suction power.

How many watts should a hoover have?

In the past, many manufacturers advertised their hoovers with a high wattage. Since this is less meaningful for the suction performance and rather ensures a high power consumption, there is since 2017 the EU regulation that hoovers may have a maximum power of 900 watts.

  • Watt: With this unit you can determine how powerful the motor of your hoover is. It also allows you to calculate the energy consumption. However, it does not refer to the suction power.
  • Suction power: This depends mainly on the “engineering”. So it is important how much loss the airflow suffers. Important factors for efficient airflow are the nozzles, the efficiency of the motor, the fan, the intake manifold, the filter system and the size and filling of the filter bag. The more filters are installed in the unit, the more the motor has to work. Furthermore, the type of floor also plays a role in the suction efficiency.
  • Floor: This also plays a role in suction efficiency. If you only vacuum parquet, a unit with a power of 600 watts is often sufficient. However, if you have demanding carpets and pets, you will probably need a model with 900 watts and a HEPA filter.
  • HEPA filters: These are particulate air filters. They remove 99.9% of dust particles from the air. They are mainly used in air purifiers. They ensure high air quality and are especially recommended for people with allergies.
  • Tests: To find a hoover that suits your needs, you should look at meaningful tests. Stiftung-Warentest also offers tests on hoovers. This way you can see for yourself how efficient the appliance is.
  • Energy efficiency: If you choose a hoover with a low wattage to save energy and protect the environment, keep in mind that you will also have to vacuum longer if the hoover does not vacuum your floor efficiently. Therefore, it may be more energy-efficient to choose a more powerful model that will get your floor clean faster.
