You can delete a WhatsApp group in just a few steps on both your Android device and your iPhone.
Leave and delete WhatsApp group on Android
To remove a WhatsApp group on your Android device, follow these steps:
- Leave group (for members and admins): Open WhatsApp and select the desired group. Tap the group name at the top to open the group info.
- Then scroll down and tap “Leave group.” Confirm the prompt.
- Delete group (only from your own device): After leaving, return to the chat overview. Press and hold the group chat until it is highlighted.
- Tap the trash can icon at the top and select “Delete group.” Optionally, you can also remove the media from your device to free up storage space.
- Note: As the administrator, you must first remove all members before you can completely delete the group. Otherwise, another participant will automatically be appointed as the administrator when you leave the group.
Leave and delete a WhatsApp group on iPhone
You can also delete a WhatsApp group on iPhone with just a few taps:
- Leave group: Open WhatsApp and select the group. Then tap the group name at the top to view the information. Scroll down and tap “Leave group”, then confirm.
- Delete group (only from your own device): Go back to the chat list. Swipe the group to the left, tap ‘More’ and then “Delete group”. Optionally, you can enable the option to delete media as well.
- Again, only if you are an admin and have previously removed all members will the group be dissolved for everyone. Otherwise, it will remain for the remaining participants.
WhatsApp Web and Desktop
You can also leave or archive groups via WhatsApp Web or the desktop app:
- Click on the group in the chat overview.
- Open the group info via the menu (three dots or arrow).
- There you will find the options “Leave group,” “Archive,” or “Delete chat.”
- Please note: Permanently deleting a group (including removing members) is currently only possible in the mobile apps.
