If your dishwasher is no longer draining, this can cause long-term damage to the machine. The cleaning power of the appliance will also decrease.
Dishwasher not draining – here’s what you can do
If there is water in your dishwasher, the drain is usually blocked. You can fix this problem yourself. If your machine displays an error message, first check the user manual. Otherwise, proceed as follows:
- Remove all removable parts from inside the dishwasher. These include, for example, the cutlery baskets, but also the filters and spray arms.
- Then take vinegar essence with an acid content of 25 percent, such as Surig vinegar essence, and a packet of standard baking soda, such as Dr. Oetker baking soda.
- Boil some water, using an amount appropriate for your dishwasher. It is best to start with around 0.5 liters.
- Below the filter, you will find an opening into which you can now pour the boiling water together with the vinegar essence and baking soda. Follow the instructions on the vinegar essence packaging and calculate the amount required based on the amount of water. Never pour undiluted vinegar essence into your dishwasher.
- Leave the mixture to work for five to ten minutes and then run the dishwasher empty.
Draining the dishwasher – other solutions
However, the cause may also be the drain hose or the pump itself.
- The dishwasher’s drain hose is connected to the sink’s siphon. Place a bucket underneath and disconnect the hose from the siphon. Hold the hose in the bucket to let it drain.
- If the hose is clogged, blow into it forcefully. Once the hose is clear, reconnect it to the siphon. However, if it is very dirty, you will need to remove it completely and clean it – or connect the dishwasher with a new drain hose.
- If the water in the dishwasher does not drain, this may be due to a blocked or defective drain pump or a problem with the electronics. Check the pump for foreign objects or blockages and remove them carefully. If the appliance still does not drain, contact an electrician.
- Tip: You can also try to force the dishwasher to drain. Take a look at the instruction manual. There you will usually find the specific procedure for your model.
