When buying music online, you will often come across the explicit version of a song. This term is often written in square brackets after a song or album. We will explain what this means.
What an explicit song means when buying music
“Explicit” means “express,” “clear,” or “obvious.” And that pretty much says it all:
- Songs with an explicit version often originate from the US and are censored for the US market.
- If songs contain swear words or other terms that should not be said, for example, then the song is censored accordingly.
- However, since these terms are usually permitted on the German market, there is often an explicit version of the song – i.e., an explicit, clear, and unambiguous version of the song. The song is then uncensored, meaning that swear words and other terms can be heard.
