Sprouting onions are easy to plant. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure success. We explain how to do this in this article.
Planting sprouting onions: Requirements and best time
If you store your onions in a warm place, some of them will start to sprout. You can use these as usual in the kitchen or plant them.
- If you plant a sprouting onion, it will grow and form leeks. You can then use these in salads or to enhance delicious soups or stews.
- In general, the best time to plant onions is in the spring. This is because onions are sensitive to frost and are therefore better protected in milder temperatures.
- However, if you take appropriate protective measures such as mulching, you can also plant the onions in late fall.
- If you have a pot, the plant can also be planted in the ground in summer or fall. It is important that it is not too frosty. Otherwise, the bulb will die.
- It is important that the germinating bulbs ideally come from healthy, undamaged specimens. If the bulbs are already damaged, they are more likely to rot when planted.
- Another prerequisite is that the soil is well-drained. This prevents waterlogging. If necessary, work in sand or perlite as an additional precaution.
- If you want to plant the bulbs in a pot, you should ensure adequate drainage to prevent root rot.
How to plant onions: Instructions
Onions love sunny locations. Therefore, place the pot or bed in as sunny a spot as possible. Also, choose a humus-rich or loamy soil.
- Dig a hole in the soil. If you want to plant several bulbs, the holes should be spaced about ten centimeters apart.
- Place the bulbs in the hole. Cover them with soil. The green leek stem, i.e., the green shoot, should be visible above the soil.
- Water the sprouting bulbs a little.
- Further care is also simple, as bulbs are very undemanding. Only water the plant when the soil is dry.
- Try to harvest the young leek shoots regularly. This encourages new shoots to grow and prevents your plant from bleeding out.
- Tip: With the right approach, you can propagate your bulbs.
