Thunderstorms are known to clear the air – if the windows are open, the fresh air also enters the home. However, there are a few things you should bear in mind.
Open windows during thunderstorms are not dangerous
A thunderstorm is an impressive natural spectacle.
- You can watch the accompanying lightning at the window without worrying. It doesn’t matter whether the window is open or closed.
- An open window does not attract lightning, so open windows are not dangerous during thunderstorms.
- However, the weather event can quickly become unpleasant when the window is open due to the rain.
This rule applies to ball lightning
There are always rumors about the occurrence of ball lightning.
- Although a study assumes that many sightings of ball lightning are due to hallucinations – ball lightning really does exist.
- Scientists have various theories for the origin of the moving, spherical lightning phenomena;
- Ball lightning is a very rare phenomenon. When it occurs, it doesn’t really matter whether your window is open or not. Ball lightning can break through window panes.
What you should look out for with open windows during a thunderstorm
So you don’t have to worry about lightning at an open window.
- However, a thunderstorm is not just about lightning. Depending on how close the thunderstorm is, the thunder can be very loud.
- In addition, a thunderstorm is usually accompanied by strong winds and squalls.
If several windows or doors are open, they can slam shut due to the strong wind. If you are unlucky, a pane of glass may break. - Rain and hail are also common side effects of thunderstorms.
- In combination with wind, an open window in the rain can quickly get your home wet.
