Broken zipper? These tricks will fix your jacket, pants, and bag right away

by Johannes

There are several ways to repair a zipper. You don’t always have to replace the entire zipper.

Repairing a zipper: What to do if it’s stuck

If the zipper on your bag, pants, jacket, or elsewhere is stuck, it’s often due to the zipper pull. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. First, try to oil the zipper or rub it with graphite from a pencil and then open and close it several times.
  2. If the zipper is still stuck, it may be that it is too tight fitting. In that case, use pliers to bend it open slightly so that it moves smoothly again.
  3. If that didn’t help either, replace the zipper. To do this, open it with pliers and pull it off the slider. Then take a similar zipper and carefully open it as well so you can place it over the zipper teeth.
  4. Carefully squeeze the replacement part back together with the pliers so that it slides smoothly back and forth along the zipper without coming off or getting stuck.
  5. This method also helps if the zipper pull has broken off and you can no longer pull it. However, in that case, you can also simply attach a small string, a paperclip, a keyring, or another tag and use it as a zipper pull.
  6. There are also replacement pulls for zipper repair, which you can purchase as a set.

Loose Slider: Effective Repair Tips

Instead of getting stuck, the zipper can also be so loose that it no longer closes. Or it simply slips off at the top or bottom, causing the zipper to open again. Another reason for an open fly could be that the zipper teeth no longer engage.

  1. If the zipper is too loose, you can carefully squeeze it together with pliers so that it fits again.
  2. If it slips off the top or bottom of the zipper, insert a stopper or sew in a small bar. To do this, sew thread several times at the point where it slips, creating a thickened section.
  3. For a temporary fix, for example until you get home, you can also use small safety pins.

Replacing a broken zipper: A simple guide

If the zipper no longer closes or keeps openingbecause the teeth no longer mesh properly, you’ll need to replace the entire zipper. If you can’t do this yourself, you can find a quick solution at a tailor’s or sewing shop.

    • You can easily remove many zippers from the fabric using a seam ripper . Then sew in a new zipper of the same size and matching color using thread that matches the fabric.
    • For long zippers, such as those on jackets, it’s worth using the sewing machine since the zipper is sewn in along a long, straight line.
    • For shorter zippers, such as those on pants or jacket pockets, it is better to sew by hand.
    • You can also have the zipper replaced at a tailor or sewing shop
