Although you can’t type a checkmark symbol directly using the keyboard, you can still create it quickly with just a few mouse clicks.
How to Type a Checkmark Symbol in Word: Instructions
The checkmark symbol is also a character in the Wingdings 2 font in Word. This is a font consisting solely of symbols.
- Type the letter [P] at the desired location in Word. Then select the letter using the keyboard.
- Change the font to Wingdings 2. You can do this, for example, via the font selection in the Start menu or by right-clicking to open the context menu.
- The P will then change into a checkmark. Now you can deselect the text with a single click and set the font back to the usual one.
Alternative: Create a keyboard shortcut for the checkmark in Word
You can also set up a keyboard shortcut that will let you insert the checkmark more quickly in the future.
- In the Insert menu, click Symbols, then click More Symbols, and select the checkmark from the list.
- Click Keyboard Shortcut and type your desired combination into the New Keyboard Shortcut field. You can choose this combination yourself.
- Make sure the combination isn’t already taken. You’ll know if it is by the text that appears: Currently assigned to: [not assigned].
- Confirm by clicking Assign and close both windows.
From now on, you can use this keyboard shortcut to insert a check mark in Word.
