Enable file version history: How to do it under Windows 10 and 11

by Mike

The file version history function helps you to create a backup of files. The way it works varies depending on the Windows version.

Enable file version history in Windows 10

To back up files in Windows 10, you can use the file version history to create backups of older versions. Conveniently, the files are automatically backed up after the first activation, should a new version of them arise.

  • In Windows 10, look for the option in the Start menu, from where you select Restore files with file version history.
  • In the window that now opens, you can configure the file version history. Note, however, that you need an external medium, such as an external hard disk, for saving.
  • In the settings you can now customise the function. For example, you can change the frequency of the backups or their storage location.

File version history: Windows 11

In Windows 11, you need to look for file version history directly in the PC’s settings. Otherwise, you can also find it in the System and Security option in the Control Panel.

  • Be aware that the function only backs up files in the main folders such as pictures or videos. All other files must be moved to these folders.
  • You can add a drive here under the settings in the Update and Security item in the Backup option. There it is also possible to activate the option
  • Under Backup, you then make the same changes as under Windows 10. It is also possible to exclude folders from the backup here.
