Animal Transport Permit: Requirements for the Certificate of Competency

by Estelle

If you wish to transport animals for commercial purposes, you need an animal transport permit. In this practical tip, we’ll show you what requirements you must meet to obtain the certificate of competency.

Animal Transport Permit: Requirements at a Glance

If you wish to transport your animals for commercial purposes over a distance of more than 65 kilometers, you need an animal transport permit. However, this certificate of competence is only valid for trips lasting less than 8 hours. In the following points, we’ll outline the various requirements for obtaining an animal transport certificate from the veterinary office.

  • If you’re a livestock owner, you can take a course on “Protection of Animals During Transport.” Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate of competence from the veterinary office.
  • If you already have relevant vocational training as a farmer, animal husbandry specialist, or equine specialist, the animal transport permit will be issued to you without the need for an additional course.
  • You can also obtain a certificate of competence if you have a degree in agriculture or a riding instructor’s license in accordance with the guidelines of the German Equestrian Federation.
  • Courses are offered by DEULA, the Chamber of Agriculture, or the Veterinary Office.

You do not need an animal transport permit for this

In some cases, you do not need a certificate of competence for transporting animals. Even for commercial trips, there are various special regulations that exempt you from the requirement for an animal transport permit.

    • For seasonal transhumance of livestock, you do not need a certificate of competence for animal transport.
    • If you transport your own animals in your vehicle for a distance of less than 50 kilometers, an animal transport permit is also not required.
    • If you transport your animals for non-commercial reasons, you are also not required to present a certificate of competence. This includes, for example, trips to or from a veterinary clinic ordered by a veterinarian.
