There are a few tricks you can use to smooth out a shirt without ironing. For the simplest one, all you need is your bathroom and a coat hook.
How to smooth out a shirt without ironing
- Ironing in the shower: Hang the creased shirt on a clothes hanger in the shower. Turn on the hot water. The clothes should not get wet in the process. Close the shower door and wait 15 minutes. The hot steam will smooth out the fabric.
- Tumble dryer and ice cubes: Put the creased laundry into the tumble dryer with a handful of ice cubes. Run the machine for around 15 minutes at a higher temperature. The ice cubes will melt, producing steam. This smooths out the creases. Afterwards, hang the clothes on hangers or put them on – otherwise new creases will form.
- Ironing with a hairdryer: Put on the creased shirt and moisten it directly against your body using a spray bottle. Blow-dry it from the outside and inside. The water and warm air will make the shirt nice and smooth.
- Ironing with a fabric smoothing spray: Fabric smoothing spray is available from chemists. Hang the still-damp clothes on hangers and spray them with the product; smooth them into shape and leave to dry. Be sure to test the spray on delicate fabrics (e.g. silk) on an inconspicuous area first.
- Smooth results through good preparation: Shirts won’t crease in the first place if you treat them gently whilst washing. Don’t spin the laundry too vigorously. Shake the clothes out well and hang them on hangers; smooth them out and leave them to dry.
