Keyboard: How to remove keys

If you want to remove keys from the keyboard, the correct procedure is important to avoid damaging the keyboard

Removing keys from a laptop keyboard

The laptop keyboard is not particularly robust and parts break off quickly. There are springs and plastic parts under the key. Take care not to damage these. Proceed as follows:

• Take two slotted screwdrivers and push one on the left and the other on the right very lightly under the button. It is important that you only lift the outer edge

• Carefully pull up both screwdrivers to release the button.

• As an alternative to the screwdriver, you can also use a so-called keycap puller. This tool is specially designed for the easy and safe removal of keys.

• Place the keycap puller on the sides of the key to be removed. Squeeze the tool lightly and pull the key straight up and out.

• Tip: If you want to remove several keys at once, it is a good idea to take a picture of your keyboard first. This way, the keys will find their correct place on the keyboard again

You should also take a photo of the keyboard before removing several keys.

• Use a slotted screwdriver to remove the desired keys.

• Place the screwdriver under the edge of the button and carefully lift it up. Tilt the screwdriver slightly to achieve a leverage effect

• The button can now be released easily.
