Hanging Kallax: How to hang the Ikea shelf securely on the wall

by Michaela

The Kallax shelves from IKEA are real all-rounders and are part of the initial and permanent furnishings in many homes. If you like, you can also hang up the Kallax series to showcase your favorite pieces even better.

Hanging up Kallax: The materials for the construction project

If you want to mount one of the Kallax models from IKEA on the wall, you will be supplied with most of the necessary materials. You will need to provide others yourself.

  • Your Kallax shelf is of course at the top of the shopping list. Your package also contains all the screws, brackets and assembly parts you need to assemble the piece of furniture.
  • In addition, you will need screwdrivers or, even better, a rechargeable screwdriver with bit and drill sets.
  • You will also need two to three screws with round heads, which are not supplied by IKEA. These should be suitable for the nature of your wall. It is best to seek advice from a specialist retailer.
  • Depending on the wall, suitable plugs may be useful, which you will need to obtain to match your screws. This is particularly necessary if the walls are made of plasterboard, for example.
  • water level makes it easier to hang the shelf, and a hammer and a pencil can also be helpful for your project.
  • location device may make assembly easier. Alternatively, you know how beams, power lines and pipes are oriented behind your walls.
  • Finally, you will need a second person to help you with the assembly.

Hanging the IKEA shelf on a wall – here’s how

Before you can start hanging the Kallax shelf, you must of course first assemble it. The best way to do this is with the IKEA assembly instructions, which explain the assembly step by step.

  1. Note that IKEA does not recommend hanging, especially for the larger models, as the weight of the shelves exceeds the load-bearing capacity of the built-in connectors Assembling a Kallax shelf is only intended for versions with up to four shelves.
  2. First screw the enclosed brackets to your Kallax shelf using the screws (type 100372) as shown in the assembly instructions. The holes for this are already pre-drilled in the side panels.
  3. After you have checked your wall for cables, pipes and other interruptions, hold the shelf in the desired position together with the brackets. It is best to have someone else help you with this.
  4. Place a spirit level on the shelf so that the screws can be placed correctly and the piece of furniture is straight afterwards.
  5. Once you are satisfied that the shelf is level, mark the holes with a cross using a pencil.
  6. The shelf can then be put to one side. In most cases, you will now need to pre-drill the marked positions correctly.
Make sure that the hole is not too large, otherwise the bracket may come loose.

  7. Depending on the wall, now insert the plugs which should be firmly anchored. The screws can then be inserted, about 1 cm of which should still protrude from the wall.
  8. Now place the shelf brackets on the screws and check once again that they are correctly seated. Now there is still time to correct any errors.
  9. You have been supplied with a small plate (type 103693) that you can now place over the screws. You can then tighten the screws. However, make sure that the screw head is now in the thinner part of the plate so that it cannot fall off.
  10. Finally, you can place the white caps on the brackets, which are also supplied by IKEA.
