You can now find a Sodastream in many households, but is it cheaper to use than to buy water? We have compared mineral water from the supermarket with home-made sparkling water from Sodastream for you

Is Sodastream cheaper than buying water?

Sodastream is now a household name. With the help of a CO2 cylinder, the Sodastream turns water from your own tap into sparkling water. Sounds practical, but a Sodastream is not necessarily cheap. This quickly raises the question of whether it’s worth switching from buying sparkling water in the supermarket.

  • The cost of a Sodastream bubbler varies depending on the model and accessories. The Terra model is currently available from Sodastream for €68, making it the cheapest option.
  • One CO2 cylinder is enough to make up to 60 litres of sparkling water and costs 30€. However, if you have a cylinder once, you can have it refilled or replaced forever instead of buying a new one every time. At Sodastream this costs 18€.
  • To determine the exact price per litre with a Sodastream, other factors need to be considered, such as how much fizz you put in the water and how expensive the tap water is. How long you use the sodastream and how many people use it also play an important role. There are some sodastream calculators on the internet that take these values into account and give you an accurate price per litre.
  • According to the calculations of the blog “Gesund mit Genuss” (healthy with pleasure), a litre of home-sprayed water costs an average of 18 cents.
  • The price of a litre of mineral water depends on whether you buy discount water or branded water. On average, the price per litre is between 13 and 55 cents, but can cost a euro for branded water.
  • Generally speaking, the cheapest water from the supermarket is less expensive than the water you drink yourself. If you usually buy branded water, then the Sodastream does better in terms of the price per litre.

Other advantages and disadvantages of Sodastream

Besides the cost factor, there are several other factors that can influence the decision to buy or not buy a sodastream.

  • Transporting the mineral water you bought home can be exhausting because of the weight. Especially if you don’t shop by car or can’t carry heavy things, the Sodastream can be an advantage
  • The aspect of sustainability also plays a role, because mineral water is often in plastic bottles. According to the manufacturer, using a Sodastream saves about 38 disposable plastic bottles per mont
  • If you like to be practical, then the Sodastream can also be an advantage. You save taking away deposit bottles and don’t have to worry about buying new mineral water in time.
