Distributing fiber optics in the house: What you should know about it

by Pramith

When you distribute fiber in your home, you’ll benefit from ultra-fast Internet speeds. Make sure it goes smoothly with the following tips.

Prerequisite for distributing fiber

The fiber optic house connection provides the connection of your house with the utility company. This involves all the lines of your property, the introduction to your house as well as your appliances.

  • When connected to the ultra-fast fiber optic network (FTTH), the home connection forms the link to the network. The DigiNetz Act took effect in 2016. This stipulates that new construction areas must be networked with fiber optics.
  • In order for your house to be equipped with optical fibers, they have to be laid right up to your property. To make this process as gentle as possible, the use of cutters as well as earth movers is recommended. This avoids possible damage as far as possible. By using earth rockets, the empty pipes are laid under the ground without causing any damage to your garden or house.
  • On the day of activation, only a small hole about the size of a coin is drilled in the wall for the actual house entry. The fiber optic cable for the house connection is fed in through this hole, which is then sealed by a specialist.

How to network your home with fiber

At the point where the optical fiber enters the interior of the house, the HÜP (house transfer point) is installed within a radius of three meters. When using an FTTB connection, the copper lines of your building are used. With modern FTTH connections, the optical fibers are laid inside the house.

  • In order to prepare the line paths inside the house, you as the customer must take appropriate measures in advance. These include, for example, the use of empty conduits or cable ducts.
  • For consistent performance, the fiber optic local loop (GF-TA) is installed in the immediate vicinity of your router. Once the GF-TA is installed, all that remains is to connect the fiber optic modem (NT) on the high-tech path to the router.
  • When you receive an appropriate fiber modem from Deutsche Glasfaser a fiber modem (NT) is mounted by the selected construction company in an environment of 0.3 – 0.5 meters to the GF-TA. Due to the required power supply, there must be a power outlet in the close vicinity (1-2m).
  • The placement of the fiber optic modem as well as the GF-TA will already be coordinated during the walk-through of your house. If you have your own router, you should discuss compatibility with your provider. The technical implementation must also be coordinated with your provider
