DPD Fake Mail: How to recognise the fake

by Pramith

Fake DPD e-mails are used by fraudsters to try to obtain your personal data. However, you can often recognise the forgeries at first glance.

Correct spelling mistakes and false pictures in a DPD fake mail

You have received a message supposedly from the parcel service provider DPD? Fake mails with the following subject are currently circulating: “We need an address confirmation to send the parcel” and “Track your parcel”. This is how you can tell that the mail is a fake:

  • Sender address: DPD as a reputable company uses @dpd.de as the sender address. The fake mails obviously have false addresses with foreign abbreviations or fantasy names like “dpd-express@rambler.ru” or “pasetori@tutanota.com”. Such a strange-sounding address is the first clue that the mail is false.
  • Recipient address: The recipient address will also seem strange to you. This is because it often contains strange, external addresses that have nothing to do with you. Sometimes there are even several addresses listed there.
  • Spelling and grammatical errors: The fake mails are often full of errors. In one sentence the recipient is addressed with the first name and in the next sentence with the second name. Or they say “your parcel” instead of “your parcel”. This is another way to spot email scams.
  • Design: At first glance the mail may look like a message from DPD, after all there is often a company picture. But if you scroll further down, you discover other designs or content in other languages that doesn’t match.
  • Further details: Normally a shipment has a parcel number and possibly a tracking number. However, several different numbers (IDs) appear in DPD fake mails.

This is what you should do if you have received a DPD fake mail

DPD fake mails belong to the group of phishing mails. Fraudsters use them to try to get the recipient to disclose personal data. In the mails, there is therefore a button that redirects to the fraudsters’ website. If you think you have received a fake mail, you should do the following:

  • Delete the email. Alternatively, you can move the mail to your spam folder. This will help your mail programme to better recognise such phishing mails.
  • If you are actually waiting for a delivery from DPD, you can enter the code given in the mail on the parcel service provider’s homepage. Since a forged code is not stored there, you will receive an error message in this case. Then you will know that it is a fake.
  • If you are unsure whether it is a fake e-mail, you can contact DPD customer service at service@dpd.de.
  • Please do not click on the links contained in the scam emails under any circumstances. Do not enter your username, password or account or credit card details.
